This interactive interview helps you generate a baseline syllabus that you can customize to meet the specific requirements of your course, your department, your institution, and your unique teaching style.

In some places, you’ll be asked to enter information and in others you can revise information that is preloaded in a field. Keep in mind that the system outputs an editable Word document, so you can add, delete, or revise anything. Don’t feel that you’re bound to what you see during the interview.

To give you an idea of what you’ll see and what information you’ll need to enter along the way, the interview moves through six sections:

  1. The Course Information section includes fields for course name, course identifier, term, and other basic information.
  2. The Instructor Information section has fields for your contact details and other information about you, including office hours, contact info, and social media accounts or websites you want to share with students.
  3. The Course Overview contains a number of fields, some of which are preloaded with information that you can start from to fine-tune your syllabus:

    1. Welcome message (Use as is or personalize)
    2. Class days and times
    3. Important dates
    4. Course outcomes (Adjust these as needed; if you don’t teach employment communication, for example, delete that learning objective)
    5. Course concept (Use as is or revise if needed)
    6. Prerequisites
    7. Expected skills (This section includes some basic, generic information to get you started)
    8. Weather and emergency closure information
    9. Resources for students (Enter information about your college’s writing center, e-portfolio hosting service, or anything else you want students to know about)
  4. The Course Materials section provides fields for whatever information students need regarding print and digital materials, including how to access your course management system.
  5. The Assignments and Grading section provides fields for everything relating to assessment:

    1. Introductory Message
    2. Grading Structure and Policies (We’ve suggested a 50/30/10/10 breakdown that you can modify as needed, along with two letter grading scales to choose from)
    3. Assessment Criteria (You’ll find assessment rubrics for written assignments, oral presentations, and professionalism; the criteria in each case are integrated closely with the flow of the textbook to help students make the connection between what they study and your expectations)
    4. Course Policies
    5. Academic Integrity
    6. Student Accommodations
  6. The Course Schedule section offers a weekly framework that aligns with your choice of a 10- or 16-week syllabus.
